Description
Israel's leaders are circling the wagons against international--particularly European--efforts to arrest them abroad on war crimes charges, and not just in connection with the contentious 22-day invasion of the Gaza Strip last winter, but earlier calamities as well. Israel is facing unprecedented isolation and international condemnation for its actions against the Palestinians, decades of thumbing its nose at world opinion, and more recently the blatant efforts of its political leaders to sabotage peace efforts because abandoning the West Bank would probably mean civil war in the Jewish state. Most Israelis, and not just the fundamentalists of the far right, have been particularly incensed by the efforts of US President Barack Obama to revive the moribund peace process by halting settlement expansion. That seemingly doomed undertaking nevertheless earned Obama this year's Nobel Peace Prize, much to the chagrin of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his hardline horde. Obama is finding it increasingly difficult, if not impossible, to broker a new round of negotiations on a two-state solution. Indeed, the portents point to renewed confrontation as the entire region teeters dangerously on the precipice of further upheaval.
